Crocodiles – those vicious animals known for their ferocious attacks, have attacked humans for prey across many places in India. Horrific sight of a Victim in the Jaws of a Crocodile, struggling and helpless, is one of the most pitiful sights we can come across. Their habitations from which they attacked humans, included mainly around Ponds, and River Banks. This list contains 6 such crocodile attacks in India.
Victims could not be saved. Very few people have escaped death from Crocodile attacks. Often ends are gruesome. Crocodiles are classified as Schedule 1 animals which means public cannot harm them and any attempt to capture them should be in the presence of Forest Department officials. Victims are paid Rs 200,000/- (around US$ 4000/-) as compensation by Central Government. Additional Compensation are given by respective State Governments.
Deadly Crocodile Attacks In India
1) August 2010:
A 32-year-old Man – Mr Vijay Bhure from Powai in Mumbai, had gone for fishing around Vihar lake, near IIT campus, Mumbai. While he was sitting on an inflated rubber tube with his feet dangling in water, he was attacked by 3 Crocodiles. The Crocodiles dragged him into the Water.
People from nearby could only watch in horror. Search operations were mounted immediately. The incident happened around 7 AM. The local fishermen after one hour managed to pull out his dead body. The body had already been half eaten by then.
2) August 2013:
A 56-year-old Farmer Jothirajan went to Old Kollidam river in Perambattu village in Tamil Nadu, to wash his farm implements. Suddenly crocodile pounced on him, grabbed him at his hip, and pulled him into the water, on hearing his cries many villagers attacked the crocodile with logs and stones. After a great deal of struggle, the crocodile left its victim. He was taken to a nearby hospital.

However, the farmer had died already having suffered grievous injuries to his hip, neck, and hands. Villagers informed authorities that 25 villages in and around Kollidam and Old Kollidam river had faced about 20 Crocodile attacks in the past 5 years, with 5 people dead and the rest incapacitated.
Crocodiles often got forcibly displaced from their habitat in nearby Vakkaramari lake, due to heavy monsoon rains, that resulted in these crocodiles occupying vantage positions in and around the banks of the Kollidam and Old Kollidam rivers, attacking their prey.
3) December 2012:
There is a Crocodile sanctuary called ‘The National Chambal Sanctuary’ where around 500 Crocodiles swarm in the Chambal river in Bhind district of Madhya Pradesh. A Father Hafiz Khan and his 12-year-old son Imran Khan went to visit the sanctuary. There were warning signs not to venture into the water.
Despite this, the boy in the boldness that his father was nearby, stepped into the river to drink some water. A huge monster crocodile attacked him. Despite the best efforts of his father, and many people around, they could not save the boy. The boy was eaten alive by the Crocodile.
4) July 2013:
A 35-year-old man called Sukhdev Parmar was walking along two Pipes laid across Vishwamitri river in Kalsat village in Gujarat. Authorities had put up these pipes to cross the swollen river. Suddenly People saw Sukhdev slip and fall into the Waters. The river waters were brimming with the Monsoon rains, and were known to be full of crocodiles.
There are atleast 200 crocodiles in that area. Rescue operations to locate the man either dead or alive, was carried out for 3 days, but in vain. The body was never found. Rescue teams themselves were attacked by many crocodiles from which they fortunately escaped.
5) October 2012:
A 17-year-old girl named Kaushalya was dragged and killed by a Crocodile in a pond in Kodaravaya village in Waghodia taluka of Gujarat. The attack was witnessed by many horrified Villagers. The Girl’s mother was one of the people to see her Daughter dying. The struggles of the girl to free herself from the crocodile was watched by many, but the struggle was in vain.
Another girl who tried to help was attacked by the Crocodile by its tail. After a night long search, the mutilated body with body parts eaten, was found the next day. It was learn that 3 Crocodiles had entered into the Pond when water was released in the nearby Ajwa dam.
6) August 2013:
In a Village called Goraj in Gujarat, a 42-year-old Woman named Swarupa Parmar, was washing clothes in the River Bank of Dev River that passes through the Village, alongwith some other Women. Suddenly a Crocodile appeared from nowhere, attacked Swarupa Parmar by its tail, and dragged the Woman into the Waters.

The other Women tried to save her but in vain. They immediately informed the Forest Department as well as other locals nearby. Rescue operations started in full swing. But they could not trace the body. After 2 days, the body floated on the surface of Water. The body floated since the water level in the river increased due to release of water from the nearby Dev dam.
The Body was in bad shape. Parts of Stomach had been eaten, one hand had been eaten. The Crocodile had buried the body in the river bed which got floated onto the surface. This was reported to be the fifth such fatal Crocodile attack in the past two years, in the same spot.
