As children will certainly face many challenges later in their lives, the early support and guidance of their parents are pivotal. But when a parent abandons his or her responsibilities, the result can truly be heartbreaking. This list shows cases of children who were neglected and starved to death by their parents.
We may never understand the reason behind these heinous crimes, but we know for sure that these parents do not deserve the gift of having a child.
1. Kim Sa-rang
In South Korea, three-month-old Kim Sa-rang, fell victim to her parents’ gaming addiction. She starved to death while her parents idled their time away raising a virtual character in a (Link 1) role-playing online game. The father, Kim Jae-beom, 41, and his wife, Kim Yun-Jeong, 25, spent 12 hours at the internet cafe while their daughter was left unattended in their home.
The body of the unfortunate baby was only discovered upon their return. The infant was severely malnourished that she died weighing nearly a pound less than her birth weight.The couple was immediately arrested due to negligence resulting to homicide.
2. Alex Radita
Alexandru Radita were living in British Columbia with his family when he was diagnosed with Type-1 diabetes. However, his parents, Rodica and Emil Radita, disapproved the findings and denied Alex of any treatment. In 2003, the child was taken by B.C. social services but was returned shortly despite the irresponsibility of his parents.
They moved out of BC after that, and nothing was heard of Alex again. About a decade later, the emaciated body of Alex was recovered by the paramedics in their home after receiving an emergency call from his father. He succumbed to infection due to his untreated disease and malnutrition.
His face was full of necrotic sores, and he weighed (Link 2) less than 37 pounds. He was already 15 when he died. Emil and Rodica were tried in court for first-degree murder.
3. Khyra Ishaq
The torture suffered by 7-year-old Khyra Ishaq in the hands of her mother, Angela Gordon, and stepfather, Junaid Ambuhanza, was truly infuriating. She starved to death when food was just within her reach. Gordon locked the food supplies in the kitchen and denied her entry to ensure she’d follow a ‘healthy eating diet.
At Home, Khyra was often beaten. She was dropped out of school by her mother for (Link 3) homeschooling. But the truth was, she was held a prisoner in her room. If she showed disobedience, she ‘d be forced to stand outside in the cold or eat to the point of getting sick.
The constant abuse took a toll on her fragile body, and she died of infection due to malnutrition in May 2008. She lost 40% of body fat and was covered with bruises from the brutal beatings she suffered.
4. Hamza Khan
In September 2011, the West Yorkshire Police searched the house of Amanda Hutton in Bradford. They found six of her young children living in the filthy house, but it was the condition of the four-year-old Hamza Khan that shocked them the most. His body was found on the couch, already (Link 4) in a mummified state.
Hamza’s mother, Amanda Hutton, confessed of her alcohol addiction problem. She struggled to provide food for her children, yet, she refused to accept any professional support. Hamza paid the ultimate price and died of starvation in December 2009.
To cover the crime, Hutton didn’t let the corpse be buried and left it in her home to rot for two years. She pleaded guilty of child abuse and was convicted by the court of manslaughter due to gross negligence.
5. Emani Moss
In Lawrenceville, Georgia, the remains of a young girl were found in a trash bin. She was charred and emaciated. The police identified her as the ten-year-old, Emani Moss.Emani grew up in an abusive home. The cruelty she suffered under the custody of his father, Eman Moss, and stepmother, Tiffany Moss was unspeakable.
She was often beaten and denied of food. Only in 2010 did the school nurse took the signs of abuse as she saw the bruised body of the girl. She reported it to the police and Tiffany was charged with child cruelty. In 2012, the child also tried to run away from home.
Emani gave in to prolonged abuse and neglect, and she died the year after. The father who was ‘surprised’ by her death, threw her in the trash bin and (Link 5) burned her. The couple was charged with murder, concealing the body, and child cruelty.
6. Riku Saito
In 2005, a Japanese man named Yukihiro Saito was left heartbroken by his wife after leaving him. Their separation didn’t sit well on Yukihiro and he turned his bitterness to his five-year-old son, Riku Saito. He started neglecting the child as he went on (Link 6) dating other women. His apathy eventually cost Riku his life.
Early in 2007, the unfortunate boy perished due to severe malnutrition and dehydration. Upon discovering the tragedy that befell his son, he immediately moved out of the apartment but continued paying the ¥60,000 (about US$600) monthly rent to keep the body a secret.The police only searched the area after a local child welfare center reported that the boy failed to attend in junior high school.
Their suspicions were confirmed after they extracted the boy’s corpse, along with the tons of trash that filled the apartment.
