The term freak show may make you think about a show on BBC. Whatever image it evokes in you, “freak shows” have existed since the sixteenth century. Back then it was a meeting place for people with special physical abnormality.
6. Martin Laurello – The Human Owl
Around 1886 Martin Emmerling was born in Germany. Though the baby was healthy, people noticed he slightly bent back. What Emmerling differs from most other ‘freaks’ from this list is that from childhood on he has worked for his success.
So he could turn his head to about 180 degrees! In the freak show world, Martin was known as “the human owl” and “Bobby, the boy with the revolving head. Together with some colleagues, he left for the United States in 1921. Here he refined his technique; according to the stories, he could rotate his head completely at any given time.

5. Mary Ann Bevan – The Ugliest Woman
The unfortunate Mary Ann Bevan – born in 1874 as Mary Ann Webster – suffered from acromegaly. This deviation is also known as a growth disorder. Mostly, the extreme growth spurt is started by a particular tumor in the brains. It happened to Bevan at the age of 32. Her length increased alarmingly.
Perhaps the hidden evils were even worse, as horrible headaches and impaired vision. When her husband died – and Mary Ann Bevan left alone with her children – she was forced to exploit its deviation. In 1920 she made her debut in the famous “Coney Island’s Dreamland Show. Here she worked until her death in 1933.
4. Mademoiselle Gabrielle – The Half-Woman
“Mademoiselle Gabrielle” was born in Switzerland in 1884. Remarkable was the absence of her legs! There even were no stumps; her torso ended just below the hips. The beauty of Gabrielle distinguished her from other women Gabrielle was blessed with highly sophisticated features. Like no other, Gabrielle knew how to turn her looks into sheer coins. She dressed according to Victorian style complete with flashy jewelry.
This approach made her a financially independent woman. At that time it was quite exceptional. Although she flirted with this lifestyle, she married less than three times. Because every time she took the surname of her husband, they lost track of Gabrielle at some point.
3. Myrtle Corbin – The woman with four legs
