Children – our precious wealth meet with various dangers in their lives in the innocence age. Criminals take advantage of their defenseless traits and cause harm to them – their physical lives, or mental torture or emotional hurt. Apart from Criminals, they face risks in their day to day activities.
Making Children aware of such risks and teaching them how to deal with different situations, will go a long way in protecting them that will be useful till their lifetime. These are some of the situations.
1. Rape, murder, kidnap
We need to caution Children to beware of Criminals. We need to educate them that not all people are good people, and there exist the bad and the ugly people, alongside the good people. We need to educate them that their co-children, or adults may indulge in inappropriate touching, inappropriate talks, unnatural sex.
We need to teach them that the bad guys among them will lure them by offering Chocolates, offering false help, requesting false assistance, etc. , then rob them or rape them or cause bodily injury to them or kidnap them for ransom or kill them also.
We should educate them to be extremely careful when dealing with strangers – both online and offline and never to travel to lonely places. They should be taught to shout when faced wit the dangerous or doubtful situation to catch the attention of fellow people.

2.Learning to use appliances / current shocks, escalator / lift / toys
Careless attitude is the nature of Children. The need to remain careful and use electrical appliances carefully need to be taught to them. We need to tell them the danger of electric shock, short circuit during usage of iron box, washing machines, the methods to use when stranded in lifts or escalators, not to use their mobiles when in charging mode, the risk of gas leakage in kitchen gas cylinders, the risk of chemicals inhalation in usage of toys, the need to be careful when using sharp objects – compass, pens, pencils, nail cutters, the need to observe caution when dealing with harmful chemicals etc.
3. Suicides of Children for a variety of reasons
Yes, you read it right. I know, and sure you must be aware of Children suicides. I am aware of shocking sorrowful suicides of 11 and 12-year-old Children. Reasons for such suicides are minor – education stress, performance stress, not getting their desired objects – mobile phones or Computers, Suicide for scolding by parents for watching TV , suicide for scolding by teacher and parents for not attending classes regularly, suicide on hearing about his favorite actor’s death, suicides on account of loneliness and subsequent depression, or suicides due to humiliation in front of class mates or school mates or strangers or others .
We need to take our Child’s utterances seriously. Whether it is a small issue or a big issue, it is best to give him his due attention, instead of carelessly shrugging his issue off. Almost all times, the causes will appear trivial to adults. But for Children, these causes could mean the difference between life and death.
When Children come to us for queries, spending a few minutes talking to them can make them see the better side. They should be taught that success and failures are part of life and that they cannot taste success always and when they fail, they should rise again from there.
Bullying from strong students to our wards. I know of 2 students of 6th standard bullying a 7th standard student captured in video, with the terrified student crying at this. The video went viral after which the students were removed from school though without remarks to protect their future.
The long-term effects of bullying on our Children are harmful. These Children need appropriate counseling and guidance from elders. School teachers should always keep watch for any signs of bullying in their environment and control them immediately.
5.Animal / insect attacks
Children need to be taught how to react in the case of animal attacks. Like, what to do when stray dogs attack them, teach them not to look into the eyes of dogs, never to harm bee hives, what to do when bees attack them, what to do when they sight a Snake, what to do when wasps attack them, or what to do when Cats or Rats attack them, teach them never to walk on roads without footwear, teach them never to venture into bushes, never to use bare hands when pushing roadside tree leaves or plants, never to travel in darkness without elders’ support.
6. Road risks
Children need to be educated how to cycle or walk or travel on public roads, the need to look in all directions carefully when crossing roads, the caution to be adopted when embarking and alighting trains, buses or other automobiles, never to indulge in risky racing, the need to ascertain risks of not only himself but also of fellow travelers, the need to wear helmets when using bikes, the need to use seatbelts when travelling in cars, never to show their head or hands or their other body parts outside buses or trains when travelling in them.
