2012 was a year of ups and downs at the box office for animated movies and many so-so movies. The top animated movies of 2012 are listed below for your review and selected viewing.
Top Animated Movies Of 2012
1. Wreck-It Ralph:
Ralph, the wreck-it guy is exhausted of being the villain and yearns to win a medal and be recognized as a hero and good fella. After Ralph expends all his effort at trying to win a medal in his own game, he jumps to another game and ultimately wins his own medal. After wreaking havoc in other games, Ralph meets a little girl that with mutual team work assists him in getting his very own medal. Find out if Ralph finally learns what it really means to be a hero while winning a medal and ultimately saving the game arcade.
The 3D animation used in this movie was absolutely marvelous and enhances the action scenes in the film quite nicely. There was also good utilization of older graphics from those retro days when arcade games were quite a hit among the masses. Incorporating 3D with 8 bit animation back and forth was slick and aided in telling the story in a crisp way.
Wreck-It Ralph is a good animated film for all age groups and gender and was one of the best movies of 2012. Make sure to book your copy when it gets released on BluRay and check out the special features included with the DVD.
2. Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted:
The Madagascar bunch is back with their minds made up more than before to return back home to New York. If they could find the penguins then they would be able to punch in their cards back home. After a spectacular entrance in Monte Carlo, they become the unwitting focus and prime target of a special animal control agent who will not stop till the entire gang gets captured. To pass through Europe unnoticed the bunch unexpectedly joins a roaming circus and discover more than what they bargained.
Madagascar 3 Europe’s Most Wanted was a thoroughly entertaining extravaganza. Your favorite safari pals Melman, Alex, Gloria, and Marty all slip out of the park once more.
The storyline of Madagascar 3 Europe’s Most Wanted was clearly laid out from the very start of the film. The events portrayed in the film followed a pattern which makes it easy for all age groups right from kids to adults to follow along the fun-filled ride. This also reduced the cumbersome task of trying to follow along the story, but rather enabled you to relax and simply enjoy the humour and vivid colours. This movie is loaded with quick witted scenes and slapstick comedy and you will surely catch something new every time you watch it again.
Set among the natural beauty and splendor of ancient Scotland, the animated movie Brave is a story about chalking out your own destiny. Our protagonist, Merida, the firstborn in her family is a right royal fire cracker. She expends her days playing with arrows and bows instead of dolls and resists her mother’s lessons of earning her place as the fair lady of the land. Merida seeks out the path to change her own destiny.
Brave was one of the most awaited animated films of 2012 and it was not a letdown fortunately. Pixar/Disney knocked out another one from their stables and I do believe Brave was yet another classic everyone will want on their mantelpiece at home. Brave has everything one would expect from a good Pixar/Disney movie. I would rate Brave as 9 out of 10. Check out the movie and give your own rating.
4. Ice Age: Continental Drift:
Still going after his favorite and beloved acorn, Scrat, the humorous protagonist shatters the earth’s crust and makes continents to drift away in diverse directions. The original 3, Diego, Manny, and Sid separated from the group struggle to find the way back. The three of them battle pirates and Mother Nature in the attempt to re-unite with their families & one new member is added to the group.
However along the adventurous and sometimes perilous journey they meet up with pirates. In Ice Age 4 Continental Drift, we are first introduced to a motley crew of misfits with evil intentions. Just like the three, Diego, Manny, and Sid the pirates have their very own nut cases and weirdo’s.
What you can expect though is a riot of laughs all through the way. Ice Age 4 Continental Drift never disappoints in the comedy front. The 3D animation was fun and fluid. It was not too overdone and it added quite a punch to the action scenes without being too distracting.
The voice talents were outstanding. Jennifer Lopez was pretty good. Ice Age 4: Continental Drift is a fabulous family movie for all ages.
5. Rise of the Guardians:
The movie’s protagonist, Jack Frost, a lonely and lost boy who does not understand the very purpose of his life on earth. When a dark spirit who flourishes on the sadness and fear of others tries to destroy the childhood of innocent children all across the globe, he is ultimately called up to fulfill the destiny. Joining the ranks of the Guardians to take up his vocation and calling and fulfill the very purpose of his existence, he must learn to defend others first instead of himself. Rise of the Guardians was rather a surprise. Although it was not a runaway hit, it was still better than the majority of animated movies for 2012.
Rise of the Guardians takes fairytale characters that many of us are familiar like the Easter Bunny, Santa and the Tooth Fairy and gives their image a novel twist.
Rise of the Guardian was a pleasant surprise at the far end of the year and pretty much the only Christmas themed film of 2012. This film is certainly better than most other animated movies released in 2012.

In a small and sleepy town there is a boy by the name Norman who has a certain unusual gift, he can see and communicate with the dead. Norman is more often than not ridiculed and treated as an outcast because of his unusual gift and the only one that believes is his new odd ball buddy.
Soon Norman realizes along with the great power comes great responsibility as he is deputed with the task of saving the town from a witch’s curse. Before watching this movie I was not sure that it was going to be kid friendly as I am just not that interested in scary movies. With kids in mind, I would point out that there are scary introductions to some characters, but once you hear them talk and see that they are not violent then the movie gets better and more enjoyable.
