SummerSlam is one of the most famous events of World Wrestling Federation. The first SummerSlam event was held nearly 25 years ago on August 29, 1988. Created as a pay-per view wrestling event SummerSlam follows up the Wrestlemania event, which is the most popular event to this date in the WWE.
Just like the other popular events, SummerSlam has also featured top matches between the WWE superstars. Let’s have a look at the six top matches of WWE SummerSlam Event since its inception.

6. John Cena vs. Chris Jericho – SummerSlam 2005:
People remember the SummerSlam 2005 probably for the Shawn Michaels vs Hulk Hogan match. But in truth the most important match of the 2005 SummerSlam event was between John Cena vs Chris Jericho. At the time, John Cena was very young and new to the WWE world. So he needed a win to become a top star.

On the other hand, Chris Jericho was considering his future with pro wrestling and WWE, and with his contract set to expire, he wanted to finish his WWE career on a high. Since Jericho was a big player in WWE since 1999 and John Cena became a hot-shot in just very short time, people have supported both of them for this match which makes this match feature on the top six matches of SummerSlam events.
In the end, John Cena won the game and Chris Jericho retired from Pro wrestling before making a sensational comeback in 2007.
5. CM Punk vs. Jeff Hardy – SummerSlam 2009
If I call the main match of the SummerSlam 2009 as the one between CM Punk vs Jeff Hardy (TLC match), most of you might laugh at me. But that’s the truth. CM Punk and Jeff Hardy stole the spot light of that event from John Cena, Batista, Triple H and Randy Orton.
CM Punk and Jeff hardy played a great match in the SummerSlam 2009, but they were never being able to get more bookings as a reward. If you are a true Wrestling supporter, you will surely agree with me listing this match here in this top list.
4. Steve Austin Winning Intercontinental Title – SummerSlam 1997:
The match between Steve Austin and Owen Hart for the Intercontinental title is one of the most famous matches in the WWE history. With Steve Austin’s popularity on the rise after winning the title a year ago, many believed that a big win over Owen was all but certain. But the unexpected happened during this match.
Both Steve Austin and Owen Hart tried a series of wrestling moves which they haven’t well versed and during one of the move, Austin’s neck came crashing to the ground and it was clearly broken. Although Austin felt numb for few moments after the move, he collected himself and did a roll-up to win the Title which makes this event feature among the top six matches of SummerSlam events.
3. Undertaker Vs Bret Hart – SummerSlam 1997
The Undertaker vs Bret Hart match which was played during the SummerSlam 1997 event has been the main source of the feud between the two legends of WWE, Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker. Shawn Michaels was the guest referee for this match and during the course of the match, there were plenty of legitimate feuds happened between Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels.
But what everyone hasn’t seen coming Undertaker losing his WWE title because of Shawn Michaels, who hits Undertaker mistakenly with a chair instead of Bret Hart. Although Bret Hart was responsible for the chaos there, Undertaker targeted Shawn Michaels after this match which result in three great matches in the WWE history including the first ever hell in a cell match.
2. Undertaker Vs Steve Austin – SummerSlam 1998
SummerSlam 1998 was witness to this event, the numerous among the top six summerslam events. Steve Austin who was considered as “King of the Mountain” after his achievement in winning the title at Wrestlemania 14. With him beating the top 2 guys and previous champions, Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels convincingly, Austin was almost unstoppable at that time.
But there was one blockade for him, the last top guy he hasn’t conquered yet: The Undertaker. So, the match took place at the SummerSlam 1998 event. Although the Undertaker played well, Steve Austin has beaten him quite convincingly and became the unstoppable force.
The Rock Vs Brock Lesnar – SummerSlam 2002
Any match featuring The Rock is considered to be a top match but this one between him and Brock Lesnar was one of the career defining matches for both of them. Brock Lesnar who was a new face at that time, really needed a big match and a big win to become a star. And that’s what exactly happened at SummerSlam 2002.
Both The Rock and Brock Lesnar fought extremely well but in the end Brock Lesnar won the WWE title and became a superstar of WWE between 2002-2004. The Rock on the other hand was at his tail end of his WWE career and after this match, it was apparent that he lost his interest for Pro Wrestling and soon he became a Hollywood Superstar.
