Some futurologist say, if the food prices and the population is increased continually, then we have to rethink about the foods we are eating right now. It won’t immediately happen, may be after 50-60 years. Definitely the high population, high price and environmental factors will create a great impacts on foods in the future.
As a result our kids, should look for some new ways to get foods. With this in mind, we have listed out the top 6 foods of the future.

1. Algae and Seaweed:
When you think of sea foods probably the fish, shrimps, crabs may come to your mind. But in the future, the seafood our kids going to eat may be based on the aquatic plants called seaweed and algae.
In the food chain, the algae was at the bottom, but it provide a great solution to many of the problems, including food shortages. It can feed both the animals and humans and meet their food needs.

Since, algae can grow in both the freshwater and marine water, we can harvest a lot of edible algae and seaweeds for our requirements. As of now, nearly 10,000 types of seaweeds are identified; in that 150 species are already known to be safe for both animal and human consumption.
Many food scientists found that the salt and other additive’s in the processed foods can be replaced by seaweed granules. It will reduce the amount of sodium in such products. For salt linked chronic diseases, we can suggest these types of products as an alternative in the future.
Some persons may be get irritated or wonder after reading this. But what you read was correct. With increasing the meat food demands, in the future it may be one of the food items. Even now, many people in the world especially in South-east Asia and Africa eat the insects like grasshoppers, spiders, and ants on a regular basis. Not only them, even the Japan people considered the wasps as a delicacy food.
As the food scarcity is a growing threat, efforts are being taken to normalize the concept of entomophagy, or the consumption of insects for the remaining people. In the year 2012, the UN’s Food and Agriculture organization published a list of 1,900 edible species of insects. The futurologist say that the insects are good sources of protein and also have high iron, calcium and low-fat.
3. Invitro meat:
The invitro meat sounds somewhat better than the meat from the insects. But it is yet going to be a weird one to get used in the future. The invitro or cultured food involves the “growing” meat in the laboratory condition. This method involves taking the cells from a live animal, which are then used to grow.
This method was experimented by the researchers in the Netherland. They have successfully cultured the first in-vitro meat in the laboratory. By culturing the stem cells from the cows, they developed the grow strips of muscle tissues.
This research was first analyzed by the people in NASA. They are looking for the resources of food that the astronauts can eat in the space. But now, the research was focused on finding new ways of producing the meat to meet the growing food demand.
One of the great thing about this kind of food is; it is eco-friendly. Since, the meat produced from the industry is one of the major source of greenhouse gases and a great source of both energy and water use, producing the meat by this way will definitely helps to reduce the environmental pollution.
4. Genetically Modified Food:
This method is currently in the infancy stage, but scientists hope that it is possible to manipulate the current foods into tastier and even more nutritious by modifying the genes of plants. This technology also helps to growing the crops in a minimum duration, making them more pest resistant, insect resistant and weather resistant. Due to that it is possible to harvest the maximum yield within the less period and can meat the growing food demand.
Researchers are working on making the crops more nutritious, by adjusting the genes which produce the proteins, vitamins and hormones of the plants. One of the great example for Genetically Modified foods is “Golden Rice”; the beta carotene was included in this food. This carotene gives bright yellow color to the rice and it is boon for the Vitamin-A deficiency people.
This deficiency can result-in blindness; not only that it is a great threat for pregnant women’s and children. But by supplementing this rice to them we can prevent hundreds and thousands of death annually due to Vitamin-A deficiency.
Not only this; the scientists are trying to produce an engineering foods to fight against certain diseases like diabetes and cancer in the future. For example: The diabetic patient eat the genetically modified watermelon; which provides a protein and they no need to take an insulin injection. By eating itself, we can cure that disease. It is actually possible by Genetically modified foods.
Even though it is not possible now (since the research is still in infancy stage) may be in future our kids will utilize this technology and rectify their problems.
It is entirely differed from the Genetically Modified (GM) foods. In GM foods, scientists are trying to change the genes of food to enhance them. But in Nanofoods they are trying to restructure the atomic and molecular structure of foods using nanotechnology to produce the nano particles.
These nano particles can alter the food taste, food nutrients even can extend the life of particular food. Currently, nanoscience are used in packaging the food items. They help to extend the shelf life of food (i.e the preservatives are released into the food), improved the product safety (by altering the consumers to spoiled the food), and repairing the torn packaging through some sort of self-sealing process.
This stuff is definitely the next-generation technology that approaches the science fiction.
6. 3D Pizza:
The great NASA has recently announced a fund for the project which aimed to create a 3D food printer, capable of making food products especially pizzas in the space. The 3D printing technology is previously in use to develop many products (but not the edible products yet).
What the 3D printing technology will do? It uses the digital model of a three-dimensional object to create that object into the real life, using an additive process which builds up the object a very thin layer of material at a time. The type of material used for this method is usually a metal or some form of the plastics.
The perception behind this project is; to boot the building blocks of food, using the above mentioned 3D printing technology method and build them up into the finished food products.
According to an engineer, who is working on this 3D printing technology project;, the numerous proteins, carbohydrates and other nutrients are extracted from the foods and make them into the powder by utilizing the dehydration process and other process.
In the powder form it will remain for months, years even decades. Such food powder can thus be taken into the space and fed into the 3D food printer and convert into food for the astronauts.
