List of best 6 registry hacks which makes your Windows computer better:
1. Prevent Windows Update from forcibly restarting your PC:
Sometimes, windows downloads important updates and decides it is going to restart your computer, whether you like it or not. Here, is how you prevent that from forcibly rebooting your computer. Two ways are there to disable this problem. As I know, this trick work in almost all versions of Windows.
a) Manual Registry Hack:
Open up regedit.exe through the start menu or run dialog, and go down to the given below key, creating new keys if they don’t exist.
Create a new 32-bit DWORD value named “NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers” and give it a value of 1 to prevent automatic reboot while users are logged on. Delete the value to put the things back to the way they were.
b) Downloadable Registry Hack:
Download and extract the registry hack files and double-click on WUNoAutoReboot.reg to disable the automatic reboots. The other script will remove the hack.
2. Stop windows update from hijacking the sleep/shutdown button:
a) Manual registry:
To hack this manually, you should open the regedit.exe using the start menu search box and then browse down to the following key, creating the key if it doesn’t exist.
After that add 32-bit DWORD value which is called as NoAUAsDefaultShutdownOption with a value of 1. No need to reboot.
Now the sleep button must be back to the way it was, but if you wanted to use the shut down option and install the updates, it will be handy through the shutdown menu:
b) Registry Hack:
Just download the file from here and do double-click on the StopHijackingMySleepButton.reg file. It will activate the registry hack. You no need to restart anything after you have done this, because the changes will occur promptly.
3. Add “Open with Notepad” to the Context Menu for all files:
If you personally hate to open any files by using “open with” option and want to add “open with notepad” option do the following steps.
Step 1: Go to Start and open Run
Step 2: Next in the Run command Type “regedit.exe” and click “OK”
Step 3: Then find and expand HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
Step 4: Browse down to the *key and expand it (click on the + to the left of the folder).
Step 5: Find the key Shell
Step 6: Do right click on the key shell, go to New and Create a New Key
Step 7: Name that Key “Open with Notepad”. Right click on the Open with Notepad key and make another key.
Step 8: Name the new Key “command”
Step 9: Click the command key and double click on the Default value.
Step 10. After that type in “notepad.exe%1” and Click “OK”
That’s it! Now you have finished so, close the regedit and marvel. All changes will occur immediately.
If you are confused or stuck at any step, just use this zip file. It will change your regedit key accordingly.
4. Add Google Documents to the Windows Explorer:
If you are a heavy Google Document user then this hack will be definitely useful for you. It helps to add the Google Document types as options right in your right-click context menu.
It will work in all the versions of Windows, you can even modify it to work with Google Apps for your domain also.
- First download the package from here after that extract the same.
- Then import the registry hack file, then do double click on the AddGoogleDocsToNewMenu.reg file, provided in the zip file and you will see a message saying it was successful.
5. Disable Caps Lock Key in Windows 7 or Vista:
Windows doesn’t have a default setting to allow for disabling the key, so first you need to re-map the key to something non-existent so then you can completely disable it.
First download and extract the zipfile which contains the following files:
- ChangeCapsToControl.reg Changes Caps Lock to be a Control key
- ChangeCapsToShift.reg Changes Caps Lock to be a Shift key
- SwitchCapsToScrollLock.reg Disables Caps Lock and swaps Scroll lock to be Caps Lock
- KillCapsLock.reg Disables Caps Lock
- DisableKeyboardRemap Uninstalls the preference by deleting the key
Once you have applied one of these registry files, you will have to reboot your computer for it to work. To uninstall, you can simply use the uninstall registry tweak.
6. Enable more fonts for the Windows Command Prompt:
To change the font, just do right-click on the title bar and choose properties from the menu. If you want to set defaults for all command prompt windows you can choose the defaults option instead.
Now on the font tab, you will be able to choose from any of the fonts that are enabled in the registry.
