The technology gets more advanced, it help us in many ways. One main advantage of advanced technology is, it helps us to understand and know more about the space. Here is the list of top 6 latest space discoveries, in no particular order.
Latest Space Discoveries:
1. The Discovery of Water on the Moon:
Since man first touched the moon and brought pieces of it back to the Earth, scientists thought that the lunar surface was dry. But new observations from three different spacecraft (Chandrayan-1, Cassini, Deep Impact Spacecraft) shows that small quantity of water are found on the moon.

Researchers said that “One ton of the top layer of the lunar surface would hold about 32 ounces of water”. NASA plans to return astronauts to the moon by 2020 for extended missions on the lunar surface.
2. Possible Water Flows on Mars:
The researchers of the Georgia Institute of Technology have found proof for the flowing of water, during warm seasons. They noticed the finger shaped features on the Martian slopes which appear and disappear seasonally. These flows indicate that the water is present in the Mars.
The water flows are forming, elongating and then fading over time. That’s why they are called as seasonal. This discovery of water not only confirmed the presence of water on the Mars, it re-energized the hope that some kind of microbial life might be using this water supply to survive.
3. New Moons Orbiting Pluto:
A Hubble Space Telescope image of Pluto and its moons. Charon is the largest moon close to the Pluto. The other four bright dots are smaller when compared to the Charon.
The Pluto’s entire moon system is believed to have formed by a collision between the small planet and another planet-sized body early in the history of solar system. The moons form a series of neatly nested orbits. The known moons of Pluto are:
This small moon was first discovered in 1978, it is almost half the size of the Pluto.
b) Nix and Hydra:
Both these moons were found in the year 2005 by a Hubble Space Telescope team studying the Pluto System.
It was discovered in the year 2011, this small moon is located between the orbits of Hydra and Nix.
The Styx was discovered in 2012. This little moon was found by a team of scientists search for potential hazards to the New Horizons spacecraft flyby in 2015.
4. A Star With a Comet’s Tail:
By using the NASA space telescope, the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) our astronomers found that the long comet-like tail was there behind the Mira star.
The Mira is a red giant, fast-moving older star which provide astronomers with new insights into the life and death of stars, even how the building blocks of life were spread around the cosmos.
The space scientists were shocked to see this tail behind the Mira. Until this discovery, everyone thought that the stars do not have tails.
5. Dwarf Planet Eris:
In 2005, the astronomers have discovered a new planet in the solar system and named it Eris. It is virtually the same size as Pluto, but it is about 25 percent more massive.
Like Pluto, Eris also has high elliptical orbit. But it is even more far-flung, orbiting the sun at an average distance of about 6.3 billion miles. It takes 557 years to complete one lap around the sun.
6. Dark Flow and Existence of Other Universes:
In the year 2008, the space scientists have faced yet another space mystery. The researchers found that whole clusters of galaxies are moving in convoy towards a single point in the sky.
This unexpected motion appears to be separate from the expansion of the universe and the researchers named this discovery as dark flow. This discovery make us to think, a parallel universe was there somewhere far away.
All these discoveries shows many mysteries are there, in the universe. They make us wondering, I hope in the near future, we will discover many amazing things in the space.
