1. Wilson’s Plot
Harold Wilson, Britain’s was the prime minister of Britain from 1964 through 1970 and from 1974 through 1976. During his 2nd term he was convinced of MI6 scheming to overthrow his government. Cold War was getting intensified in the middle of a struggling British economy and Wilson suffered bouts of severe paranoia.
From sources outside the country or within the military, he believed a coup was imminent and Lord Mountbatten would be appointed as his successor. Most rejected Wilson’s delusional conspiracy theories, but few actually believed his absurd claims of imminent doom.
2. The Profumo Affair
John Profumo, State Secretary for War during Harold Macmillan’s prime minister-ship was introduced to dance artist Christine Keeler, a Russian diplomat’s paramour. They were involved in an extramarital relationship. Profumo resigned in the year 1963 when the affair became public and evidence was presented.
In the following election, Macmillan’s party lost. British intelligence investigations found that the Russians got no secrets from Profumo and the incident was just forgotten.
3. Robert ‘Palladium’ Boothby
Robert Boothby had been a member of parliament for more than 30 years and was known for his sexual exploits. He had a longtime illicit relationship with Dorothy Macmillan, Prime Minister Harold Macmillan’s wife. Being a compulsive gambler he came into contact with his long time boy friend Leslie Holt.
Their gay relationship drew the attention of Reggie and Ron Kray who were heading a crime syndicate in London, in which Leslie Holt was a member. A leading newspaper reported Scotland Yard had investigated an unnamed political figure’s homosexual affair with an underworld criminal. The public doubted they referred to Boothby. He filed a lawsuit against the paper for defamation and got £40,000 as compensation.
4. John Prescott’s Boxing Blow
John Prescott, was a politician and deputy prime minister during Tony Blair’s regime. In 2001, when campaigning in the city of Rhyl he was hit by an egg thrown at him by a protester as he was stepping off the bus. John Prescott also an amateur boxer hit the protester on his face with his left hand.
Citing his action as self-defense, John evaded criminal prosecution. Prescott jokingly stated about the incident later that he had not been quick enough as to avoid getting hit. He faced no backlash at all.
Tony Blair when asked about his opinion on the incident commented, “I am fortunate to have John as deputy.” Another classic closed case of assault going unpunished just because the perpetrator was a politician.
Member of Parliament, John Thorpe began an affair with the wrong guy in the year 1961. The wrong man in question, Norman Scott started speaking about the affair publicly although John Thorpe kept the affair from going public for years. Norman Scott became an unmanageable liability for Thorpe and the party.
So, John hired an ex-pilot named Newton to get rid of Scott. The hit-man drove Scott into thick woods along with a Great Dane, the guy was looking after. He was about to shoot Scott but then decided to kill the dog first. When he aimed at Scott to shoot him next, the gun got jammed.
The hit-man out of panic fled the scene, leaving Scott very much alive. Scott filed a lawsuit and the trial which followed resulted in Thorpe getting acquitted making him disappear from public view.

6. Death of John Stonehouse
John Stonehouse was a politician in Parliament of Britain for over 20 years. Following several failed business deals with major companies, he tried his hand at embezzling money which drew the attention of the police. In 1974, few days before being charged formally his clothes were discovered on a beach at Miami and he was presumed drowned.
But John Stonehouse was very much alive. He had relocated to Australia and he was living there with a false identity. But his escape from the long arm of the law lasted only for a month or so.
He was found out by the police and taken to Britain. He ran legal defense on his own and pleaded innocent citing insanity as the reason but this strategy backfired. He got convicted on close to 20 counts of theft and fraud and sentenced to 7 years in prison.
