According to statistics from the United Nations (LINK1), one in five cases of honor killing internationally every year comes from India. Of the 5000 cases reported internationally, 1000 are from India. Women are considered family property in traditional Indian societies.
Their marriages are arranged by parents or elders and relations outside caste are frowned upon. But proximity to city and access to education bring in modern influences creating a conflict between traditional beliefs and aspirations in the mind of young. And these sometimes have fatal consequences. Most shocking in all these cases of honor killings is lack of guilt and lack of remorse.
