Depression has killed many people around the world. One of the primary outcomes of depression is ‘Suicide’. WHO is the international governing body which records health data calculates the suicide ratio of all the countries. WHO gathers data from respective countries? The total rate of suicides is calculated by number of suicides reported divided by number of deaths.
There are chances that some countries might report lesser number of suicides. Suicide normally happens in all kinds of countries. Whether they are rich or poor, from Africa or Asia, male or female. It doesn’t consider geography, demography etc. Below mentioned are some countries with highest number of suicides.
The first country in the list if Guyana. Guyana is based out of African continent. Number of people doing suicide in this country is 44 out of 1 Lakhs. It is far higher than the second highest ranked country when it comes to suicide. The main reason for such a high number can be attributed to the fact that there are very few psychiatrists in the country. So no necessary medication and counseling is possible of patients who are undergoing psychological problems. Another key factor for such high rate of suicide is the availability of pesticides freely. This country is one of the poorest in the world and so people look for such substances for suicide attempts.

Second in the list is surprisingly a very developed nation which is South Korea. This country might be making it marks in technology and communication. But unfortunately it is just some places behind the top ranked suicide. Many elderly people commit suicide in this country. It tops the list of highest suicide rate in OECD. There is wide spread poverty among the elderly people which is the main cause of suicide. So we can conclude that poverty and suicides are interrelated. Elderly people try not to be a burden on the family because of which they commit suicide. There are necessary steps taken by the government to curb the suicide rate. It has given them good results. Men commit more suicides as compared to women.
Third in the list is the island country – SriLanka. As per official estimates everyday 11 people commit suicide in SriLanka. Many of the people commit suicide are youngsters. It was highest between the age group 21-35 in 1980. Poverty, joblessness etc. are the primary reasons behind the suicides. Government is taking necessary actions to curb the suicide rates. Highly toxic substances are not freely available which are used by people for suicide.
After the cold war, USSR underwent through lot of financial and political troubles. Lithuania also got affected due to it. Economic and social problems discouraged lot of people resulting in more suicides.

Similar circumstances of poverty and other such social problems faced have also effected ‘Suriname’ – another African country close to Guyana.
Last on the list is Mozambique. Suicide is a national issue here. Close to 2% of the deaths in this country are because of suicide injuries
