The rules of Russian roulette are pretty simple. Pick a gun, preferably a revolver and remove all bullets except one. Aim at the side of your head and pray for forgiveness then pull the trigger and hope your brains remain intact and inside your skull. We all know the game.
We’ve seen it in countless movies and we love the rush one must feel when it clicks empty. Some of us have taken it further and actually play the game thinking it must be fun. I’m not sure how much fun dicing with the grim reaper is, but the following six people are now permanent fixtures in cemeteries for daring death.
6. Anthony Martin
Alcohol and firearms do not mix. We would think people know this by now. Apparently they don’t. This is one lesson 21-year-old Anthony Martin (LINK 1) of Pueblo Colorado should have learnt early on. Anthony was out drinking with his friends one weekend in 2011 when they decided to have some more fun.
A gun was produced and Anthony suggested they play some Russian roulette. He proceeded to put the gun to his head and pull the trigger. He did not know that a live round was in the chamber and he leaked his brain all over the scene.
When police arrived he was already dead. No arrests were made as the gun was legally registered to one of his drinking buddies and Anthony acted alone. Police also said that the eyewitness accounts were all consistent and the physical evidence supported the fact that Anthony killed himself.
5. Maria Christopher
When a woman gets killed and her suspect boyfriend is the only one on the scene, police always assume the boyfriend did it. This is what happened on 17th September 2003, when 21-year-old Maria Christopher got killed in the now closed Hot Buttaz CDs and Tapes store at 8150 Shore Drive in Norfolk. Her on and off boyfriend Shawn Greer said it was simply a game. She aimed the gun at Shawn and pulled the trigger.
Then it was Maria’s turn. She decided to change-up the game by putting on freaky music and playing the store’s keyboard. They both burst out laughing, then the inevitable happened. Before Shawn knew it, Maria was dead. Shawn covered up the accident by burning Maria’s body beyond recognition.
Judge Junius Fulton III sent Shawn to prison for Maria’s murder for a total of 47 years. His sentence was later reduced by 27 years, but the death of Maria cost her mother who moved back to her home in Morocco and was hospitalized for excruciating headaches and high blood pressure.
4. Brandon Reese
On January 12th 2016 (LINK 2), 22-year-old Brandon Reese’s body was found in a truck on John Everall Road by a property owner. Local investigators confirmed that on the night of his death, Brandon had been with three other people. One of them, Lakendrick Wade said that Brandon came to his house just after 9pm and asked for a gun.
They then picked up another person and proceeded to head on over to a fourth person’s home on West Meeting Street to retrieve the gun. Brandon was promised the gun under one condition; they had to play a game of Russian roulette.
He agreed and fired the gun in the back of the truck, dying on the spot.
The owner of the weapon fled the scene with his gun and the others decided to drive to Springs Memorial Hospital but were afraid and instead abandoned the truck. Police caught up with Lakendrick and charged him with attempted murder and also questioned the owner of the gun.
3. Christian Salazar
In North Miami Beach on December 2nd 2013 (LINK 3) Christian Salazar, Brandon Lapeikis and two other friends were watching Monday Night Football in Lapeikis’ home in North Miami, and marijuana was involved. Christian and Brandon were friends from high school and Brandon was a family friend to Christian’s family.
Christian brought along his gun and they played Russian roulette where they aimed the empty gun at each other and slapped the person who flinched. While out on a trip for fast-food, Christian loaded the gun and didn’t tell anyone. Later in the night, Brandon fetched the gun and pointed it at Christian. He pulled the trigger and was astonished when it fired and the bullet pierced Christian’s head.
Brandon rushed out to a neighbor’s house and called the police saying he had shot his friend by mistake. Christian was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital but unfortunately died the next day. Brandon got charged with second-degree murder but the charge was downgraded. Christian’s mother Wendy Jaramillo said she forgave Brandon for what happened and sought forgiveness instead of revenge.
2. Armand Cyr
Still on the topic of drugs and firearms, in July 2014 John Dybowski (LINK 4) was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, making a false statement, reckless endangerment and tampering with evidence. Armand Cyr apparently shot himself in the head while video chatting with a friend in John’s apartment. John and Armand were using heroin when they decided to play Russian roulette with a .38 caliber revolver.
Not realizing the connection between using drugs and operating ‘deadly’ machinery, Armand wound up dead a few moments later. An arrest warrant stated that a witness had seen Armand shoot himself through video chat, and the prosecutors could not find a way to hold John responsible for the death. He was sentenced to five years in prison for related charges.
1. Jaskaran Singh
In the parking lot of a Dallas hotel on June 13th 2015 (LINK 5), a gunshot rang out and disturbed the calm air, and in the aftermath an 18-year-old Jaskaran Singh lay dead. Jaskaran and a friend, 27-year-old Vikram Virk, had decided to play Russian roulette in Virk’s car. They took turns pulling the trigger, aiming the gun at each other.
Jaskaran went first and pulled the trigger. The gun failed to fire and it was Virk’s turn. The gun went off and Jaskaran lay dead from a head-shot. Virk immediately rushed his friend to Methodist Hospital in Richardson where he was pronounced dead.
Talking to the police, Virk initially lied about the shooting and said that Jaskaran was playing with the gun and shot himself, but later changed his statement confessing that he had fired the fatal shot. He was arrested and taken to the Dallas County Jail where he was charged with manslaughter.
